On Wednesday evening February 27th the Tri-State alumni chapter kicked off 2008 with a reception at the residency of Renilde Loeckx, the Consul General of Belgium in New York. The reception was hosted in honor of the Tri-State Vlerick alumni and was very well attended: there were 17 alumni and significant others spanning 45 years of graduation classes!
We had the pleasure of welcoming multiple new faces to our Tri-State group and hope to see more of them in the future. André Cormeau (PUB 1962) moved to the US for what was supposed to be two or three years - over 30 years later he's still in the States and enjoying it very much. Brieuc de Hults (MFM 2006) and his wife Laurence Glidden moved to New York at the end of last year along with Fortis' Currency Management team where for Brieuc is a Quant Research Analyst. Wasim Mir (IMBAL 2001) and his wife Britt Groosman represented the UK contingent among the alumni that evening. Wasim works as a Counselor on Management Reform and Finance projects at the United Nations. Pieter Van Brabandt (MFM 2007) and his colleague Valentyna Kryva (MGMG 2006) just started their six months deployment at the Manhattan and New Jersey offices of Fortis. They're enjoying getting to know both the financial markets and the main cities on the East Coast. Laurent Verhelst (PUB 1996) was in town visiting from Indianapolis, IN where he works as the Commercial Finance & Pricing Manager at tool manufacturer The Stanleyworks.
We were very happy to see several of the alumni we've gotten to know over the past two years. Hans Candries (SLFM 2001) works as a Manager Performance Improvement at the consulting practice of PricewaterhouseCoopers. Nico Clemminck (PUB 2004) and his girlfriend Praneet Gill are second year MBA students at Columbia Business School. Upon graduation Nico will join McKinsey in Stamford, CT and Praneet a private equity shop in Manhattan. Mathieu De Sutter (SLFM 2002) and his wife Lieselotte Wachters just came back from their trip to Argentina, a nice break from the hard work that Mathieu puts in building the US business for Petercam. Jewel Huijnen (SLM 1998) has been working in the hedge fund industry since graduating from Wharton and is an Associate Director at Bear Stearns Asset Management. Halina Kochanowicz (PUB 1998) heads up Marketing and Business Development for Linklaters´ US business and previously did the same for the law firm's Brazilian business in São Paulo. Simon Kooyman (MBAL 1979) is the CEO of Knowledge Networks, one of the top 25 US market research companies with numerous Fortune 500 clients. Charles-Antoine Wauters (SLFM 2004) works at the law firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton.
We would like to thank Evelien Bekaert (PUB 2003) for her enthusiastic participation in the Tri-State chapter. Evelien returned to Belgium after her stint as the Client Relationship Manager of Allen & Overy's New York office ended.
Everyone had a great time getting to know the Consul General and each other over champagne and hors d'oeuvres. For many it was also an opportunity to learn about the role of the Belgian Consulate, the Consul General and her economic Attachés. The reception was hosted on the tenth floor of a beautiful Upper East Side building on Fifth Avenue overlooking Central Park. The evening continued at Brasserie 8 1/2 located in the Solow Building where six of us had an excellent dinner followed by an impressive battle of the desserts.
The reception was the last event organized by Liaison Officer Jewel Huijnen. Jewel will continue to be an active member of the Tri-State Chapter but is passing on the baton to the next leader. In her two years as Liaison Officer she's built the Tri-State Chapter from scratch to where it is today and has worked with many local alumni in the process. For instance, Jean-Pierre Jacqmotte (PUB 1964) mapped the country into regions for local Chapters; Robin Van Oudenhove (PUB 2003) helped organize the degustation dinner featuring Vlerick´s Director of International Development; Charles-Antoine Wauters was instrumental to the first IMBA students dinner with keynote speaker Georges Ugeux, and Mathieu De Sutter got the Tri-State alumni to go see a Knicks basket ball game. Jewel also co-hosted alumni drinks with Wharton and INSEAD, laying the foundation for cooperation with other top business schools in the future.
The next event will be the second annual dinner with Vlerick´s International MBA students on Tuesday evening March 25, 2008.
About 100 Vlerick alumni currently live, work or study in the USA. Local alumni Chapters have already been launched in New York, NY, Washington, DC and Los Angeles, CA.
