A huge population, a swiftly developing economy, rapidly increasing incomes, huge consumer numbers… It are characteristics shared by the BRIC countries, among which India. Given this beneficial socio-economic context, Goldman Sachs argued that by 2050 the combined economies of the BRIC countries could eclipse the combined economies of the current richest countries of the world. 

H.E. Jaimini Bhagwati will elaborate on India as one of the (future) leading world economies and the opportunities that this generates for the “old continent”. He will also consider to what extent the current financial crisis has affected this emerging Indian economy and what the role is of Europe and India in the new economic world order.

J. Bhagwati took over his assignment as Ambassador of India to Belgium, Luxembourg and to the European Union on 15 September 2008. Immediately prior to being appointed India’s Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg and the EU, Dr. Bhagwati served as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India and earlier as Chief, Corporate Finance in the World Bank. He has also served as Joint Secretary (Capital Markets, External Commercial Borrowings and Pension Reforms) in the Department of Economic Affairs in the Government of India.
